I hate change. I hate using new programs that require extra time to adapt to them. Then when I was asked in this Education Honors course to try something new, I was really agitated. Putting all of my important cites for research projects and other assignments into Microsoft Word worked just fine already. I kept asking why I must adjust something that already suits me. However, once I grew to be comfortable with Evernote, I fully understood change is not always a bad thing.
Evernote and the web clipper helped me a lot during my Education Honors course. I first found great use for it when we began our context reports. The context report required the students to find information and statistics on different aspects of a county and a school within that county. Being from New Jersey, I knew I had a lot of research ahead of me considering I had no background on Rhode Island schools. I started using Microsoft Word at first but within two days of research I became overwhelmed. So that is when I made the switch to Evernote. I was able to become more organized, create folders and add titles to different notes. This program immediately helped me further my organization methods and made the research process a lot less stressful. Even once that assignment ended, I continued using it for other assignments. It especially became important when I was told to research the effects of extracurricular activities on a student’s behavior. The idea behind this team project was to not only research the effects on behavior but other aspects like academics and safety measures as well. When I was looking for scholarly articles and newspaper clippings to support my topic, I commonly came across articles that would suit my partner’s needs. Within Evernote, I was able to separate my research and articles that I found that could help further their research. Evernote helped me a lot in this Education class. It specifically helped me with research projects and keeping myself organized through the long process.
Not only did I use Evernote as an academic aid, I used it to help organize my personal life. As I became more comfortable with this once strange program, I began to use it every day. I began my Christmas Wish List on this site and created folders for decorations that I would like for my off-campus house next year. I generally use this site as an organization tool. I began using it multiple times a week, outside of class even. I used it to generate different notebooks for different occasions primarily to develop the best organization scheme I could. What I like about Evernote is that you can insert links into the various notes. I did that with majority of the items I found that way I could easily access the website if I needed to in the future.
By viewing Evernote and the resources I have currently put in my Personal Knowledge Base (PKB), I will be able to participate and bring more to future classes. I have a lot of scholarly articles and websites that I found helpful in this Education class posted under one notebook with a little description below each one (to detail what each site is about without having to click on the site). In future classes, I will be able to use the reliable resources that I have already found. It will be easier than finding new websites considering I will already be familiar with the various layouts and the different types of information I can find on each site. I will be able to bring more knowledge to each class I take considering college is about bringing previous knowledge to every new course you take. Using my notes from Evernote also provides me with the dates that I updated each notebook on. This can help me determine which year and even which class I gathered my information in. Overall using my PKB will help me participate more in class by citing more scholarly and reliable articles to support the learning I am constantly do in higher level classes.
When I began using Evernote, I was highly overwhelmed and constantly agitated. I did not like the idea of change or using new programs for a class I was only taking for one semester. However, by the end I realized using Evernote can help my knowledge stay up to date and constantly expand at an exponential rate. I can use it for not only this class, but for all my future classes. I can also use it to maintain my personal life. In the end, Evernote turned out to be a very useful source that I will continue using the rest of my college career.
